Pizza and pets bring crowds downtown

Shortening the Old-Time Jamboree by a day did nothing to lessen the fun at the popular summer celebration.
In its 38th year, the Jamboree’s annual pizza-eating contest and pet parade continued to provide big draws.
This year’s pizza eating contest, sponsored by Darrell and Denise McCarty of Olde Towne Pizza, featured mainly teens and younger children who had appetites beyond their years.
The title and new champion was John Reid, 17, of Amherst, who managed to down an entire pie, swallowing the final bite as time ran out.

This is an excerpt from a story by correspondent Carl Sullenberger. For more Jamboree coverage, read the July 13 issue of the Amherst News-Times.
