Mercy signs on to rec center project
Floor plans were unveiled Friday for Amherst’s new recreation center, with a new name attached: The Mercy Recreation and Health Center.
The health care system and MetroParks announced they have forged a plan to operate the new exercise facility jointly, and Mercy will locate rehabilitation services to 9,500 square feet of the building.
Physical and occupational therapists will give their patients use of the building’s therapy pool and strength-building equipment during business hours. Statistics collected at the Oberlin SplashZone and other recreation centers show most residents use such facilities before 8 a.m. and after 5 p.m.
Mayor David Taylor was excited about the plan.
He told the News-Times the hospital-park partnership will be good for the health of the community, but it will also be good for the health of Amherst’s income tax collections.
MetroParks director Dan Martin said Mercy will move many high-paying medical jobs to the site.
