Police ask for help solving break-ins
Burglars have been making off with jewelry, electronics, purses, and more in a series of break-ins that started Sunday.
Amherst police warn that thieves have entered homes during early morning hours while residents slumbered.The crooks typically find a rear sliding door that is unlocked and slip inside. In other cases, locked screen doors have been cut or jimmied open.
As many as five burglaries may be the work of the culprits, detective Dan Jasinski said today in a written release.
The primary area of concern is located between North Lake and Lincoln Streets, but at least one other burglary — which may or may not be connected to the rest — happened on the east side of town near Rt. 58 and North Ridge Road.
Police are encouraging homeowners to secure their homes by locking windows and solid doors. They also advise locking garage doors.
Officers have told News-Times reporters many times over the years that many residents don’t feel it necessary to lock doors. They say that’s a big mistake.
During the recent investigations, police learned that several witnesses have seen burglars but did not call to report them. They ask that citizens call in any suspicious activity immediately.
